Flood Alert in force: River Wansbeck.

Flooding is possible for: The Rivers Wansbeck, Font, Hart Burn and their tributaries.

Be prepared.

River levels are forecast to rise on the River Wansbeck and its tributaries as a result of persistent heavy rainfall today which is forecast to continue overnight and into Wednesday. Consequently, flooding of riverside footpaths and low lying land and roads is expected from 22:00 – 19/01/21.

Further heavy rainfall is forecast to continue falling across the catchment for the next few days and consequently we expect river levels to remain high.

We are closely monitoring the situation and will issue Flood Warnings if necessary. Our incident response staff are out on the ground checking defences and clearing any blockages from rivers. We are closing the Morpeth flood gates.

Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses.

What you should consider doing now
———————————————

* Monitor local water levels and weather conditions.

* Keep your staff and customers informed about the situation.

* Get ready to act on your business flood plan if you have one.

* Move cars or other vehicles to higher ground, if it is safe to do so.

* Check that you know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies.

* In rural locations, farmers should consider moving livestock and equipment away from areas likely to flood.

* Avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water. 30 cm of fast-flowing water can move a car and 6 inches can knock an adult off their feet.

* Flood water is dangerous and may be polluted. Wash your hands thoroughly if you’ve been in contact with it.
